I’ve never been shot at before. Which might sound incredible since I spent so many of my young adult years on the street. But I’ve always been able to sniff out a bad situation and get the hell out before anything like this went down.

Goosebumps pop out on my arms as I recall that bullet slamming into Braxton’s shoulder.

I saw it. Saw everything like it happened in slow motion. The way the moonlight winked over the deadly copper. The wind pulsing around it as it sped through the night. The way it pierced straight through Braxton’s tux and disappeared into his shoulder.

In that moment, horror had washed over me so thoroughly that I couldn’t even scream.

Just calm down, Raven. Breathe.

The door opens and I scramble to my feet.

A tall, broad-shouldered man walks into the room.

But it’s not Braxton.

“Oh, it’s you,” I say, not bothering to hide the disappointment in my voice as I look at Dan. “Where’s Braxton?”

“Elsewhere.”

“Is he okay?”

“He’s fine.”

“Let me see for myself.” I stride forward.

Dan remains in front of the door, his expression hard. “Not possible, ma’am.”

“What the hell is going on?” I thrust my arms out at the gorgeous room that looks more like a spa than a hospital. “Why did you lock me in here? The doctor came and went a long time ago.”

“Mr. Valtin wanted you to have a thorough check-up.”

“I told you. I’m fine.” I huff out a breath. “Braxton… he took the brunt of that fall.”

Tears burst to my eyes when I remember how he’d thrown himself in front of me. Why would he do that? Why would he risk his life for me?

“When Mr. Braxton is finished with the doctor, he’ll see you.”

I eye Dan, recalling how the bullets had slammed into his gut. My gaze slides over his dark black hair, chiseled jaw line and down to his barrel chest. He’s built like a line-backer, nothing but lean muscles and strength.

I thought he was just an ex-con-turned-personal-assistant, but the way he’d moved tonight had been lethal. So were the bullets that slammed into his gut.

“Why are you still standing?” I ask.

He studies me with a puzzled look.

I tilt my head, slowly advancing on him. “You got shot. I saw the bullets flying into you. They hit you. But you’re completely okay.” I walk around him, noticing that there’s not even a speck of blood on his clothes. “Did you change or something?”

Instead of answering, Dan places a finger to his earpiece. His eyebrows knit together as he concentrates on the conversation. After a while, his brown eyes ram straight into me.

“Is it Braxton?” I ask.

“Mr. Valtin wants to see you.”

When Dan opens the door, I tear down the hallways like a madwoman. I don’t even know where I’m going, but Dan’s calm stride is just a pace too slow for me.

“This way, ma’am.” Dan points to the room at the end of the hospital’s private wing. It’s the same floor I was rushed to after the police and ambulance arrived on the scene.
